About Fairtrade Sugar
Fairtrade Sugar was first introduced in several European markets during the late 1990s, expanding to the UK in 2000. The initiative aimed to improve the livelihoods of small-scale sugar cane farmers and their communities, who were often undervalued within the global sugar industry. Through Fairtrade certification and collaboration with sugar cane processors, farmers gain better access to international markets and acquire essential business and technical skills to enhance their competitiveness globally. Today, 99 farmers’ organizations, representing over 54,960 smallholder cane farmers, participate in Fairtrade certification for sugar. This includes farmers from some of the world's poorest nations, such as Malawi, Mozambique, and Swaziland.
